Welcome and thank you for taking the time to find out more about me! I have called Durango home since moving here from the Midwest in 2005. I worked as a hospital pharmacist for over 20 years before developing the courage to make a career change. I recently received my Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Adams State University. What I have learned from this change is that I truly enjoy getting to know people on a personal level.

My life’s path has taken many unexpected twists and turns, and these have helped to form the person I am today. In overcoming many of life’s obstacles, I have developed an appreciation for the importance of perspective and the art of resiliency. I am passionate about working with others and supporting them as they go through the process of self-discovery. Life has a way of throwing challenges into our path. These challenges can be viewed as opportunities to grow and reach our fullest potential. My goal is to create a safe space to help you work through the anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, fear of failure, and traumatic or troubled past that may be keeping your from reaching your goals.

My usual approach to counseling follows the framework of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or ACT. ACT utilizes mindful awareness and acceptance to help create a new relationship with our inner experiences – thoughts, feelings and emotions, memories, judgments, and rules we unconsciously follow in life. It also places a strong emphasis on identifying your values to guide behaviors. The main goal of ACT is to allow for the psychological flexibility to recognize, accept, and respond to our inner experiences rather than reacting from them or trying to control or suppress them. Within the framework of ACT, I am able to incorporate additional elements from person-centered counseling, solution-focused treatment, narrative therapy, and interpersonal neurobiology.

In addition to ACT, I have received training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is one of the most effective and rapid methods for treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It has also proven successful in helping people who struggle with recent traumatic events, anxiety, panic, and many other emotional problems.

I have also been trained in guided hypnosis or hypnotherapy and use this as an adjunct to traditional counseling methods. Hypnotherapy induces a trance-like state that allows for a calm and relaxed focus and concentration. Hypnotherapy has been studied and used in treating anxiety, phobias, insomnia, substance abuse, and many other applications.

In addition to traditional talk therapy, I am excited to be able to provide Neurofeedback Therapy. Neurofeedback is a direct intervention that works to train the brain to maintain stability and to regulate itself. The result is often an ability to maintain a sense of calm focus. Click here for more information.
